INTRODUCTION
Neha: "Namaste," I'm Neha and welcome to the Absolute Beginner Series, Lesson 14, Shopping.
Maya: "Namaste," I'm Maya. In this lesson you'll learn how to shop in Hindi.
Neha: The conversation takes place in a clothing store.
Maya: It is between Pallavi and the shopkeeper.
Neha: Since they are strangers, they will be using formal Hindi.
Maya: Let's listen to their conversation.

Lesson conversation

पल्लवी (paLLavii): दीदी, मैं एक जोड़ी मोज़े चाहती हूँ। (DiiDii, main ek jodii moze caahaTii huun.)
दुकानवाली (DukaaN vaaLii): आप कौन सा रंग चाहते हैं? (aap kauN Sa rang caahaTe hain?)
पल्लवी (paLLavii): काले। इसका दाम क्या है? (kaaLe. iSakaa Daam kyaa hai?)
दुकानवाली (DukaaN vaaLii): पचास रुपये। (pacaaS rupaye.)
पल्लवी (paLLavii): बहुत महँगा है। क्या आप यह तीस रुपये में देंगे? (bahuT mahangaa hai. kyaa aap yah TiiS rupaye men Denge?)
दुकानवाली (DukaaN vaaLii): ठीक है। (thiik hai.)
Let's listen to the conversation one time slowly.
पल्लवी (paLLavii): दीदी, मैं एक जोड़ी मोज़े चाहती हूँ। (DiiDii, main ek jodii moze caahaTii huun.)
दुकानवाली (DukaaN vaaLii): आप कौन सा रंग चाहते हैं? (aap kauN Sa rang caahaTe hain?)
पल्लवी (paLLavii): काले। इसका दाम क्या है? (kaaLe. iSakaa Daam kyaa hai?)
दुकानवाली (DukaaN vaaLii): पचास रुपये। (pacaaS rupaye.)
पल्लवी (paLLavii): बहुत महँगा है। क्या आप यह तीस रुपये में देंगे? (bahuT mahangaa hai. kyaa aap yah TiiS rupaye men Denge?)
दुकानवाली (DukaaN vaaLii): ठीक है। (thiik hai.)
Let's listen to the conversation with English translation.
पल्लवी (paLLavii): दीदी, मैं एक जोड़ी मोज़े चाहती हूँ। (DiiDii, main ek jodii moze caahaTii huun.)
Maya: Sister, I would like a pair of socks.
दुकानवाली (DukaaN vaaLii): आप कौन सा रंग चाहते हैं? (aap kauN Sa rang caahaTe hain?)
Maya: Which color would you like?
पल्लवी (paLLavii): काले। इसका दाम क्या है? (kaaLe. iSakaa Daam kyaa hai?)
Maya: Black. How much is it?
दुकानवाली (DukaaN vaaLii): पचास रुपये। (pacaaS rupaye.)
Maya: 50 rupees.
पल्लवी (paLLavii): बहुत महँगा है। क्या आप यह तीस रुपये में देंगे? (bahuT mahangaa hai. kyaa aap yah TiiS rupaye men Denge?)
Maya: That's very expensive. Will you give it for 30 rupees?
दुकानवाली (DukaaN vaaLii): ठीक है। (thiik hai.)
Maya: Ok.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Neha: You know, in India, many things can be bought cheaply, if you know how to bargain.
Maya: Yes, in fact, everyone should have a healthy suspicion of all the shopkeepers, especially if you are a tourist.
Neha: And unless you're sure about the prices you should suspect that the prices have been hiked up.
Maya: It's not only about the shopkeepers trying to rip off tourists but even the locals have to bargain to get the price down.
Neha: Of course, this is not true for all things but you will find that this is often the case when you go shopping for clothes.
Maya: Okay then, now that you've been warned, I'm sure you'll be a smart buyer!

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Maya: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson So, in our last chapter, Talking about Family, we discussed what the words for brother and sister are in Hindi.
Neha: Yes, do you remember? बहन (bahaN) for "sister" and बहनें (bahaNen) for "sisters," while भाई (bhaaii) for both "brother" and "brothers."
Maya: And just as you say in English, "older brother," "younger brother," "older sister," and "younger sister," in Hindi you’ll say...
Neha: "Older brother" for बड़े भाई (bade bhaaii), "younger brother" छोटा भाई (chotaa bhaaii), "older sister" is बड़ी बहन (badii bahaN) and "younger sister" is छोटी बहन (chotii bahaN).
Maya: But there are also single words that can mean "big" or "elder sister" in Hindi.
Neha: Just as you heard in the conversation, दीदी (DiiDii) or "big sister," can be used to address female strangers. You can also use बहनजी (bahaN jii) to address female strangers in a respectful manner.
Maya: For males, you can address them as भैया (bhaiyaa) or भाईजी (bhaaii jii).
Neha: Next let's talk about the verb "want" or "like." It comes from the verb चाहना (caahaNaa), which means "to want," and changes according to the gender and count of the subject.
Maya: Which means that if you are a single female speaker or many female speakers or are talking about a single or many females then you use...
Neha: चाहती (caahaTii).
Maya: If you are a single male speaker or are talking about a single male, you use...
Neha: चाहता (caahaTaa).
Maya: And if you are many male speakers or are talking about many males, you use...
Neha: चाहते (caahaTe).
Maya: And if you are a group of people with mixed genders or are talking about them, then you use the same verb as that of the group of males, which is...
Neha: चाहते (caahaTe).

Lesson focus

Maya: In this lesson, we'll focus on how to say "I want [blank]," and "How much is it?" in Hindi.
Neha: Yes, both are a must if you want to do some shopping in your local Indian market.
Maya: If you are a female speaker, you use the format...
Neha: मैं [blank] चाहती हूँ। (main [blank] caahaaTii huun.) and insert the object that you want after मैं (main).
Maya: Let's listen to an example. "I want an apple." in Hindi is...
Neha: मैं एक सेब चाहती हूँ। (main ek Seb caahaTii huun.)
Maya: Okay, how would you say, "I want a pen."? "Pen" in Hindi is कलम (kaLam).
Neha: You say, मैं एक कलम चाहती हूँ। (main ek kaLam caahaTii huun.)
Maya: Now, if you are a male speaker, the only change would be in the verb "want," which would turn into चाहता (caahaTaa) instead of चाहती (caahaTii).
Neha: So you use the format मैं [blank] चाहता हूँ। (main [blank] caahaTaa huun.) and you insert the object that you want after the word मैं (main).
Maya: So, if you are a male speaker and want to say "I want an apple," you'd say...
Neha: मैं एक सेब चाहता हूँ। (main ek Seb caahaTaa huun.)
Maya: Now, what if you are a group of people and wanted to say "We want an apple."? You'd say...
Neha: हम एक सेब चाहते हैं। (ham ek Seb caahaTe hain.)
Maya: Now, another thing you would need while shopping is to be able to ask for the price.
Neha: इसका दाम क्या है? (iSakaa Daam kyaa hai?)
Maya: Means "How much is this?" Here, इसका (iSakaa) means "this," दाम (Daam) means "price," क्या (kyaa) means "what," and है (hai) means "is."
Neha: So literally, you're asking, "This price what is?" which translates as "How much is this?"
Maya: Please repeat after Neha. "How much is this?"
Neha: इसका दाम क्या है? (iSakaa Daam kyaa haai?)
Maya: To ask "How much are these?" you change "this," which is इसका (iSakaa), into "these," which is इनका (iNakaa), so it becomes...
Neha: इनका दाम क्या है? (iNakaa Daam kyaa hai?)
Maya: Please repeat after Neha again. "How much are these?"
Neha: इनका दाम क्या है? (iNakaa Daam kyaa hai?)
Maya: How would you say "How much is that?" and "How much are those?" you know when talking about things that are a bit further away?
Neha: Well, obviously everything stays the same except for the words "that" and "those."
Maya: So, "How much is that?" would be...
Neha: उसका दाम क्या है? (uSakaa Daam kyaa hai?)
Maya: Please repeat. "How much is that?"
Neha: उसका दाम क्या है? (uSakaa Daam kyaa hai?)
Maya: And "How much are those?" would be...
Neha: उनका दाम क्या है? (uNakaa Daam kyaa hai?)
Maya: Please repeat. "How much are those?"
Neha: उनका दाम क्या है? (uNakaa Daam kyaa hai?)
Maya: Well, listeners, that's all for our lesson today.
Neha: Don't forget to read the lesson notes for more examples and explanations!
Maya: Thank you for listening. Until next time!
Neha: शुक्रिया और फिर मिलेंगे! (sukriyaa aur phir miLenge!)
