INTRODUCTION |
Maya: "Namaste," I'm Maya, and welcome back to HindiPod101.com’s Beginner Series. This is Season 1, Lesson 11 - Who’s That Indian Celebrity? |
Udita: "Namaste, I’m Udita in Hindi". In this lesson you’ll learn about asking questions about events. |
Maya: The conversation takes place on the streets. |
Udita: The speakers are strangers. One of them is a young woman who goes up to a middle-aged woman to ask a question. |
Maya: Since they are strangers, the speakers will be using formal Hindi. |
Udita: Let’s listen to the conversation. |
DIALOGUE |
A:आंटीजी यहाँ पे आज लाईन किस लिए लगी है? (aaNtijii yahaan pe aaj LaaiN kiS Lie Lagii hai?) |
B:बेटा, यहाँ आज एक आनेवाले नई फिल्म की प्रचार के लिए एक बड़े स्टार आ रहे हैं. (betaa, yahaan aaj ek aaNevaaLe Naii fiLm ki pracaar ke Lie ek bade Staar aa rahe hain.) |
A:कौनसे स्टार आ रहे हैं? (kauNSe Staar aa rahe hain?) |

B:सुना है श्याम को आएंगे. (SuNaa hai syaam ko aaeNge.) |
Maya: Now, let’s listen to the same conversation at a slow speed. |

POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Maya: Let’s talk about Indian movies! I know that a lot of Indians are big big fans of their movies and movie stars. |
Udita: Yes, movies play quite a big part in people’s lives in India. There are many different movie industries for each language group. |
Maya: Right, but the Hindi film industry, also called Bollywood, is the biggest. People across India watch it, even in non-Hindi-speaking regions. |
Udita: Some of the most popular actors are the Khans - Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Salman Khan. They have a massive fan following! |
Maya: They’ve been very successful in Hindi movies, for over 20 years now! |
Udita: There’s also a crop of popular younger actors who you see everywhere in India - Hrithik Roshan (riTTik rausaN), Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, and others. They are actually everywhere - on advertisements on TV or posters around town, doing movie campaigns, TV shows, and they’re even involved with cricket teams! |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Udita: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
Maya: The first word is “pracaar”, which means ‘promotion’. |
Udita: This is usually combined with “kaa, kii, or ke” to say ‘for promoting’. |
Maya: For example, “main iS driNk ke pracaar kaa kaam karTaa huun” means ‘It’s my job to promote this drink’. |
Udita: “pracaar” is also combined with “karNaa”, which means “to do”. “pracaar karNaa” means “to promote”. |
Maya: The next word is “jamaa”. |
Udita: जमा ‘jamaa’ is a verb participle meaning “gathered”. |
Maya: This can be combined with the verbs “hoNaa” and “karNaa”. When combined with “होना” ‘hoNaa’, it means “to be gathered”. |
Udita: For example, if you were to say ‘Saare bacce yahaan jamaa hai’, that would mean “All the kids are gathered here”. |
Maya: On the other hand, if you combine “jamaa” with “karNaa” it becomes “to gather”. For example, ‘Saare piN jamaa karo’ is an imperative sentence that means “Gather all the pins”. |
Udita: The next word is पसन्द ‘paSaND’ and it means ‘liking’. |
Maya: Sometimes it functions as a noun, where it means “taste”. |
Udita: For example, you can say “ye merii paSaND hai”, and this means “this is my taste” or rather “this is my choice”. |
Maya: In the passive voice, you could also use it to say “baNDar ko keLaa paSaND hai”. The literal translation is “Banana is liked by monkeys”, but the meaning is the same as “Monkeys like bananas”. |
Udita: In the active voice, it would be “baNDar keLaa paSaND karTaa hai”. So the subject and object change, but the meaning is similar. |
Maya: Ok, now let’s look at the grammar. |
Lesson focus
|
Udita: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use the word ‘kauN’ meaning “who”. |
Maya: There is no fixed rule about where it is placed in a question or statement. So you can ask the question “who is that man?” in Hindi in more than one way. |
Udita: For example, you could say “वह आदमी कौन है? vo aaDmii kauN hai?” |
Maya: Right, and you could also say “कौन है वह आदमी? kauN hai vo aaDmii?” |
Udita: The meaning remains the same, but the order allows a speaker to put emphasis on different parts. |
Maya: Another use of “kauN”, is when combined with “Saa, Sii, or Se”. This changes the meaning to “which” |
Udita: “kauNSaa, kauNSii or kauNSe” is used for asking about what kinds or types. |
Maya: In the dialogue, we heard the question “kauNSe Staar aa rahe hain?” This means “Which movie star is coming here?” |
Udita: Again, there is no fixed structure for the question using “kauNSe”, but it has to come before the noun which gives us the category. |
Maya: Like in “kauNSe Staar”, if we were to say “which shoe” it would be “kauNSaa juuTaa”. |
Udita: The only exception is an adjective, which can come before the noun. Here’s an example. “कौनसी लाल टोपी ढूँड रहे हो? kauNSii LaaL topii dhuuNd rahe ho?” In this ‘LaaL’ comes between ‘kauNSii” and the noun ‘topii’ which means hat. |
Maya: The meaning is ‘Which red hat are you searching for?’ Now, how would you say “which languages can you speak?” |
Udita: Well, “Language” is ‘bhaasaa’, and the plural will be “bhaasaaen”. “Aap kauNSe bhaasaaen boL SakTe hain?” |
Maya: Now listeners, here’s a question you can try saying in Hindi - “Which house is yours?” Leave us a comment saying it at HindiPod101.com. |
