INTRODUCTION |
Maya:“Namaste”, I’m “A”. Welcome to HindiPod101.com’s Beginner Series. This is Lesson 19 - Making Plans in Hindi, Part 2. |
Udita:“Namaste”, I’m Udita. In this lesson you’ll learn about giving suggestions and making plans. |
Maya:The conversation takes place at a cafe. |
Udita:It’s between two good friends. |
Maya:Since they are good friends, the speakers will be speaking in Informal Familiar Hindi. |
Udita:Let’s listen to the conversation. |

Maya: Now, let’s listen to the same conversation at a slow speed. |
A:कल रनबीर की फिल्म आ रही है, नई वाली| देखने चलें? (kaL raNbiir kii fiLm aa rahii hai, Naii vaaLii. DekhNe caLen?) |

Maya: Let’s now listen to the conversation with the English translation. |
A:कल रनबीर की फिल्म आ रही है, नई वाली| देखने चलें? (kaL raNbiir kii fiLm aa rahii hai, Naii vaaLii. DekhNe caLen?) |
A: There's a new movie starring Ranbir Kapoor releasing tomorrow. Do you want to go watch it? |
B:अरे हाँ! मुझे भी देखनी है. लेकिन कल नहीं जा सकती, श्याम को मौसी ने घर पे बुलाया है. (are haan! mujhebhii DekhNii hai. LekiN kaL Nahii jaa SakTii, syaam ko mauSii Ne ghar pe buLaayaa hai.) |
B: Oh yes! I want to watch it too. But I can't go tomorrow. I'm supposed to be at my aunt's place in the evening. |
A:तो परसों चले जाना मौसी के यहाँ| (To parSon caLe jaaNaa mauSii ke yahaan.) |
A: Why don't you go see your aunt the day after tomorrow? |
B: नहीं यार बहुत दिनों से तै है. फिल्म परसों नहीं देख सकते क्या? (Nahiin yaar, bahuT DiNo Se Tai hai. fiLm parSon Nahiin Dekh SakTe kyaa?) |
B: No way, it's been fixed for a while now. Can't we go watch the film on the day after tomorrow? |
A:हाँ वो ठीक है. दोपहर में चलें? सुबह को कुछ काम है | (haan vo thiik hai. Dopahar mein caLen? Subah ko kuch kaam hai.) |
A: Yeah, I guess that's fine. How about the afternoon? I have some things to do in the morning. |
B:हाँ पास में साकेत मॉल में? वहाँ लंच करके पिक्चर देख सकते हैं | (haan paaS mein SaakeT mauL mein? vahaan laNc karke pikchar Dekh SakTe hain.) |
B: Yeah sure, at Saket Mall nearby? We can have lunch there and then watch the movie. |
A:अच्छा, चलो ठीक है. (achha, caLo thiik hai.) |
A: Okay, that's fine. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Maya:Let’s talk about Indian movies some more! The industry is commonly known as Bollywood - a lot of people don’t agree with that naming, but it has caught on! |
Udita:Yes it’s been called that for a long time now. The Hindi movie industry is based out of Mumbai, and the city used to be called Bombay in English, which is how Bollywood got the ‘B’ in it’s name. |
Maya:It’s a massive industry now! There are a good number of movie releases every Friday, and people watch more than ever before. |
Udita:Especially the younger generation. There has been a big boom of malls in urban India in the last decade, and it has become really common for young people in cities, to go spend their time in a mall, and watch Hindi movies with friends, practically every week. |
Maya:A very big chunk of India’s fast-increasing population is young, below 30 years of age. This group is an important consumer base for the entertainment industries, especially Bollywood. |
Udita:Yes, that’s why they are an important target group, and appealing to them is important for Bollywood actors. |
Maya:Some actors like Ranbir Kapoor are known as “youth icons”, because they seem to have a big connection with the younger generations. |
Udita:Actors like Ranbir, Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma have managed to become big stars due to their youth appeal, even if they are not on the same level as big superstars like the Khans - Shahrukh, Aamir, Salman, who have been successful actors for about 20 years now. |
Maya:Ok, let’s move on to the vocab. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Maya:Now let’s take a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
Udita:The first word is ‘बुलाना buLaaNaa’. This is a verb that means “to call”. |
Maya:There are 3 uses of this. One is ‘to call’ as in “call out to”. |
Udita:For example “मैं ने ज़ोर से बुलाया लेकिन तुम्हे सुनाई नहीं दिया maiNe zor Se buLaayaa LekiN Tumhe SuNaaii Nahiin Diyaa”. This means ‘I called out to you loudly but you didn’t hear me”. |
Maya:The second meaning is “to call for someone” or “get someone here”, as used in this sentence “जल्दी से डाक्तर को बुलाअो jaLDii Se dauktar ko buLaao”. |
Udita:It means “Call for a doctor quickly.” The third meaning is “to invite over”. Like in this sentence “ताऊजी ने सबको लन्च पे बुलाया है Taaujii Ne Sab ko LaNc pe buLaayaa hai”. |
Maya:This means “My uncle - father’s older brother - has invited everyone over for lunch.” |
Udita:The next word is ‘यार yaar’. It literally means “friend” or “friends”, but it’s one of those words that’s used just about all the time in daily speech without context. |
Maya:Yes it’s one of the most common slang words you’ll hear used in Hindi between friends, similar to the way people may say “dude” in North America or “mate” in Australia, and it’s used even more frequently. |
Udita:Yes young people tend to use this word a lot, so much so that in cities even when people are speaking English with friends, they’ll use ‘यार yaar’ the way they do in HIndi. |
Maya:The next word is नई वाली which means “the new one”. |
Udita:“vaaLii” is the feminine postposition used for indicating objects, by their description. The masculine form is “vaaLaa” and the plural is “vaaLe”. |
Maya:This postposition is used with adjectives. “Nayaa” means “new” so when combined with “vaaLaa” as “Nayaa vaaLaa” in the masculine form or “Nayii vaaLii” in the feminine, it can be used to identify any noun by its new-ness. |
Udita:Right, so “Nayaa vaaLaa ghar” will mean “the new house”. Just “Nayaa ghar” means “new house”, which can refer to any new house, but “Nayaa vaaLaa ghar” refers to “the new house” or “the newest house”. |
Maya:Okay, now let’s move on to grammar. |
Lesson focus
|
Maya:In this lesson you’ll learn about the suggestive Future Tense. |
Udita:This is used in the conversation we heard earlier when Maya says “देखने चलें? DekhNe caLen?” |
Maya:This tense is used in as a suggestion, and as a suggestive question. This is why it is not in the simple future tense. |
Udita:That’s right. ‘चलें caLen’ for example is in the plural form, and means “should go”. |
Maya:‘चलें’ can be used with nouns like this - Place + चलें? For example “गोआ चलें?” would mean “Should we go to Goa?” and also “Let’s go to Goa!” |
Udita:It is both a suggestion and a question at the same time. You can also use it with a verb. The verb is changed to the verb-root + ‘ने” which is the marker for verb endings which denotes the meaning “and”, for doing more than one action. |
Maya:For example ‘घूमना ghumNaa’ means “to travel or sightsee”. This becomes “घूमने चलें? ghumNe caLen?” which means “Shall we go travelling?” |
Udita:Any verb can be made into this form as with ‘चलें caLen’, by adding ‘en’ to the verb root. For example, ‘देखना DekhNaa’ means “to see”. The verb root is ‘देख Dekh’ so this verb would change to ‘देखें Dekhen’. |
Maya:If the verb root ends with a vowel then the ‘en’ is added after the vowel. For example ‘खाना khaaNaa’ means “to eat”, and since the verb root is ‘खा khaa’, the suggestive Future tense becomes ‘खाएं khaaen’. |
Udita:Here is an example with another verb. “दोबारा करें? Dobaaraa karen?” ‘दोबारा Dobaaraa’ means “Again” and ‘करें karen’ comes from the verb “करना karNaa” which means “to do”. |
Maya:So “दोबारा करें? Dobaaraa karen?” means “Should we do it again?” This tense is also used in another way, which is a suggestion to a group of people or to someone, spoken respectfully. |
Udita:It’s in the conditional future tense, so you would use this when addressing people in this way - “If you do something...”, and that’s where “do something” could be “करें karen”, “go somewhere” would use ‘चलें caLen”, “see something” would use “देखें Dekhen”. |
Maya:That’s right. So this tense can be used to make a question with a suggestion, or make a conditional suggestion to others. Let’s try an example. How would you say “It’s best if you all sit over there”? |
Udita:“it’s best” would be “बेहतर है behTar hai’ or “अच्छा है acchaa hai”, and ‘ you all’ is “आप सब aap Sab”. So it would be “आप सब वहाँ बैठें तो अच्छा है aap Sab vahaan baithen To acchaa hai”. |
Maya:That’s right! |
Outro
|
Maya:Good, now that’s all for our lesson, but here’s one you can try on your own “Let’s play football?”. You can also go further and try this sentence in Hindi - “If you all play football well, I will give you chocolates.” |
Udita:Let us know what you come up with, with a comment at HindiPod101.com! And don’t forget to check out the lesson notes for more examples! |
Maya:We hope you enjoyed this lesson. Thank you for listening, and until next time! |
