Lesson Transcript

Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn conversational phrases to answer the question, "What are you doing?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to answer this question and tell someone something about what you’re writing.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
तुम क्या कर रहे हो? (Tum kyaa kar rahe ho?)
मैं अपनी डायरी लिख रहा हूँ। (main apaNii daayarii Likh rahaa huun.)
Once more with the English translation.
तुम क्या कर रहे हो? (Tum kyaa kar rahe ho?)
“What are you doing?”
मैं अपनी डायरी लिख रहा हूँ। (main apaNii daayarii Likh rahaa huun.)
“I'm writing my journal.”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say “What are you doing?”
That's:
तुम क्या कर रहे हो? (Tum kyaa kar rahe ho?)
Listen to it again:
तुम क्या कर रहे हो?, तुम क्या कर रहे हो? (Tum kyaa kar rahe ho?, Tum kyaa kar rahe ho?)
This Hindi sentence literally translates as “You what doing are?”
But it means “What are you doing?”.
Now, how do you answer this question?
The pattern is:
मैं [object] लिख रहा हूँ। (main [object] Likh rahaa huun.)
This Hindi sentence literally translates as “I [object] writing am.”
But it means “I'm writing [object].”
For example:
“I'm writing my journal.”
मैं अपनी डायरी लिख रहा हूँ।, मैं अपनी डायरी लिख रहा हूँ। (main apaNii daayarii Likh rahaa huun., main apaNii daayarii Likh rahaa huun.)
