Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 9 - Getting Ready for a Road Trip in India
INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, and welcome back to HindiPod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 9 - Getting Ready for a Road Trip in India. Eric Here.
Udita: नमस्तेNamaSTe I'm Udita.
Eric: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask what to do if a particular situation arises. The conversation takes place over the phone.
Udita: It's between Karan and a member of the staff.
Eric: The speakers are strangers in a customer service context, so they'll be using polite Hindi. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Eric: Listen to the conversation one time, slowly.

Eric: Listen to the conversation with the English translation
Karan: Hello, is this Singh Car Rental company? I would like to ask about renting cars.
Staff: Yes, please go ahead.
Karan: What is the process for renting cars?
Staff: It's very simple. You come in for registration with identity papers. Along with that you have to make a one-time deposit. Then you can rent a car.
Karan: How early do you have to make a reservation?
Staff: You can always do it the day before, but then there is more possibility of there not being a car available. The earlier you make your reservation, the easier it will be to get a car.
Staff: There are terms and conditions as well, which you have to sign, such as with responsibility in case of accident, and so on. When you come here we will go through those clearly.
Staff: Of course, if you are planning for a long trip, then you must make the reservation at least a day in advance, so that we can find a driver able to go all the way and return.
Karan: Okay, and how big are the cars you have available?
Staff: We have all sizes of large vehicles available. You can rent a minibus too if you like, which will fit 10-12 people comfortably.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Eric: Can you tell us a little about car rental in India in case any of our listeners decide to go rent a car, like Karan?
Udita: Sure. I’ll ask you a question first - in most countries, when you hire a car, who drives it?
Eric: Um, the person renting it? Is this a trick question? Are you trying to trick me?
Udita: No, not at all! And you’re right - in most countries if you rent a car, you drive the car.
Eric: But it’s different in India?
Udita: Yes, if you rent a car in India, most of the time you get a driver too.
Eric: You get a driver to drive the car for you?
Udita: Yes. It’s common courtesy for you to cover the driver’s meals and in return they’ll drive you around.
Eric: That might be a good idea, considering how busy Indian roads are.
Udita: If it’s a long-distance journey that involves highways and roads outside of cities, they aren’t as congested. In some places, you have to be careful for the occasional animal that may wander onto the road though!
Eric: I’ll remember that! How are these country roads? Nice and smooth?
Udita: A lot of them are, but not all! Some of them can be very rough, so make sure you have good tires and a good camera to capture the scenery as you drive through.
Eric: That’s a good tip! Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Eric: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Udita: शर्त sarT
Eric: meaning "terms,” or “bet"
Eric: What can you tell us about this?
Udita: शर्त sarT is a noun, and it means “bet” or “condition”.
Eric: How do we use it?
Udita: When it’s used as a bet, you can use it with the intransitive verb लगना LagNaa or transitive verb लगाना LagaaNaa, which both mean variations of “to hit”.
Eric: When combined with those verbs, what does it mean?
Udita: लगी शर्त Lagii sarT is the same as “want to bet?” And शर्त लगाना sarT LagaaNaa is ‘to make a bet’.
Eric: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Udita: Sure. For example, you can say.. हमने शर्त लगायी थी यह देखने के लिए कि कौन सब से पहले पहुंचेगा। hamNe sarT Lagaayii THii yah DekhNe ke Lie ki kauN Sab Se pahLe pahucegaa.
Eric: ..which means "We made a bet to see who would reach first." What's the next word?
Udita: हादसा haaDSaa
Eric: meaning "accident, unfortunate event"
Udita: हादसा haadSaa is a noun. It’s used only for events that aren’t good and are unexpected.
Eric: One-off occurrences?
Udita: Right.
Eric: Can you give us an example using this word?
Udita: Sure. For example, you can say.. इस हादसे के बाद से हम बहुत परेशान हैं। iS haaDSe ke baaD Se ham bahuT paresaaN hain.
Eric: .. which means "We have been very upset since this accident." Okay, what's the next one?
Udita: कम से कम kam Se kam
Eric: meaning "at least"
Eric: Can you break this down for us?
Udita: Sure. कम kam means “less” and से Se is the preposition “from”. The phrase कम से कम kam Se kam literally means “lesser than less”.
Eric: So “at least”.
Udita: Yes. It can be placed anywhere in a sentence.
Eric: How would you say the similar phrases “at least” and “at the very least”?
Udita: कम से कम kam Se kam - they're said the same way.
Eric: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Udita: Sure. For example, you can say.. कम से कम हमें मिलने का मौका तो मिला। kam Se kam hamen miLNe kaa maukaa To miLaa
Eric: .. which means "At least we got the chance to meet up." Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to ask what to do if a particular situation arises. So let’s start with the most important thing - Udita, how do we ask “what should I do in X situation?”
Udita: X के समय मुझे क्या करना चाहिए? X ke Samay mujhe kyaa karNaa caahie?
Eric: And you can substitute situations for X. Udita, how do you say earthquake in Hindi?
Udita: भूकम्प bhuukamp.
Eric: So how do I say, “what should I do during an earthquake?”
Udita: भूकम्प के समय मुझे क्या करना चाहिए? bhuukamp ke Samay mujhe kyaa karaNaa caahiye?
Eric: ...which is the phrase from before, with the Hindi for “earthquake” at the front.
Udita: Another important sentence is X में क्या करना चाहिए? X mein kyaa karNaa caahie?
Eric: Which means “What should I do in X?”
Udita: Both of the sentences end in करना चाहिए karNaa caahie, which means, "should do", and this remains the same regardless of gender or level of politeness.
Eric: There is a list of the sentences for different genders and levels of politeness in the lesson notes, so check that out. Also in the lesson notes, there is a vocabulary list for different troublesome situations.
Udita: Remember, we already covered “earthquake”.
Eric: So let’s have a quiz. Udita, pick two words and we’ll see if our listeners can guess the English meaning.
Udita: Okay! The first word is खतरा khaTraa and the second आग aag.
Eric: Do you know what they mean, listeners? (Pause) Udita, can you tell us the answers?
Udita: “danger” and “fire”, in that order.
Eric: How did you do? Don’t worry if you didn’t know them, you can check those and more in the lesson notes!
Udita: If we go back to करना चाहिए karNaa caahie, you can also use other verbs with this.
Eric: Not just nouns? That’s useful!
Udita: Take the verb phrase तबियत ख़राब होना TabiyaT kharaab hoNaa
Eric: Which means “to become ill”. We can say...
Udita: तबियत खराब होने पर क्या करना चाहिए?TabiyaT kharaab hoNe par kyaa karNaa caahie?
Eric: Which means “What should you do if you get sick?”
Udita: Yes. You need to use पर क्या par kyaa in the sentence in-between the verb and करना चाहिए karNaa caahie.
Eric: Thanks for the explanation!

Outro

Eric: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time!
Udita: अलविदा aLviDaa
