| In our previous lessons, we learned how to use the verbs “to-be” hoon, hain, hai, paas. We also learned how to use paas to express possession. In this lesson, we’re going to learn how to use a word like “not” so we can say things like "I'm not" something or "I don't have" something. |
| The magic word here is nahiin. This word is like the English word “not.” It can also be used like the English, “No”, so in some sentences you will actually hear it twice! |
| Let's take an example. Imagine you meet someone and you ask him if he is Indian. The word for Indian is bhaaraTiya. It turns out that he isn’t Indian, so he answers, No, I’m not Indian” |
| nahiin, main bhaaraTiya nahiin hoon. |
| (slow) nahiin, main bhaaraTiya nahiin hoon. |
| Let’s break this down. |
| The first nahiin is like the English “No,” |
| After this comes main, which means “I”. |
| After this comes Bharatiya, which means “Indian” |
| Next comes the second “nahiin”. Here it is functioning like the English “not”. |
| Finally, we have “hoon” which is like the English “is” |
| Do you see how easy it is? Just start the sentence off with “nahiin” to say No! And then |
| insert nahiin before the verb “hoon” to make it negative. |
| Let’s look at another example: |
| Let’s say you now ask your new friend if he has a car. He answers, No, I don’t have a car. |
| nahiin mere paas gaadii nahiin hai |
| (slow) nahiin mere paas gaadii nahiin hai |
| Did you catch the word “nahiin?” |
| Let's have a look at the way we changed this sentence from “I have a car,” to “No, I don’t have a car.” |
| "I have a car" is mere paas gaadi hai. Remember? |
| "No, I don't have a car" is nahiin, mere paas gaadii nahiin hai |
| First we put nahiin at the beginning of the sentence to mean “no”. |
| Then we simply inserted nahiin before the verb “to be” - “hai”. By adding these words, the meaning becomes, no, I don’t have a car. |
| Easy, don't you think? So now you can turn many sentences into the negative form just by adding the word nahiin |
| Now it’s time for Prerana’s Points |
| If you want to answer negatively but without being too direct, you can add the word vaisey to a sentence in which you use the word nahiin. This means something like "by the way,....." |
| So if you want to say "I don't really like cars," it will be vaisey mujhe gaadiyan pasand nahiin hain. |
