namasTe meraa naam preranaa hai. aap se milkar khushi hui. |
Hi, My name is Prerana. Nice to meet you. |
Welcome to HindiPod101.com’s HindiPod101.com’s “Hindi in 3 Minutes.” The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Hindi. |
In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verb karnaa which means "to do" and the very useful word rahaa to indicate something you are doing right now. |
In this lesson, we will learn how to use achha lagnaa, a phrase that may come in handy in all sorts of situations. |
achha lagnaa means something similar "to like" in Hindi, so in this lesson we are going to see how to use it correctly. Let’s start! चलिए शुरू करें ! |
Imagine you are in a restaurant with your significant other and he or she asks you: kya Tumhe naan achhaa lagTaa hai? |
This is an informal way to say something like "Is Naan good for you?" |
So supposing you like it. You can say haan mujhe naan achhaa lagTaa hai. |
[slowly] haan mujhe naan achhaa lagTaa hai. |
So let’s break down this answer: |
First we had: |
haan which is simply "Yes." |
Then mujhe which is the pronoun "I" |
naan which is an Indian flat bread |
achhaa, which is good |
lagTaa which is “seems” |
hai which is the verb to be. |
haan mujhe naan achhaa lagTaa hai. |
Please note: Naan is a masculine word, so achhaa lagTaa is also in the masculine form. If the object you like is feminine, it will change to achhii lagTii. |
In Hindi we use the phrase achhaa lagnaa to express that we "love" or we "just like" something or someone. |
Even if you just appreciate something, you can use achhaa lagnaa. |
In fact, the phrase achhaa lagnaa can have many degrees of strength, and this often depends a lot on the word that comes before it. For example, if you say mujhe naan kam achhaa lagTaa hai it will mean that you like naan, but not so much. |
To say that you really love or enjoy something or someone, you can add the word bahuT before achhaa as in mujhe yah film bahuT achhii lagTii hai which means "I really like this movie". Here it is stronger and means you like it very much. |
Now it’s time for Prerana’s Points. |
In Hindi, if you really want to insist on the fact that you love something, you could use another verb pasanD which is "to like" something or someone. |
Thus, you will certainly hear mujhe ghoomnaa pasanD hai! often. This means "I really enjoy travelling!" |
In this lesson, we learned how to use the verb achhaa lagnaa depending on how much you like something or some person! |
Next time we’ll learn another very useful verb, aanaa. |
Do you know what this Hindi verb means? I'll be waiting for you with the answer in the next lesson of Hindi in 3 Minutes lesson. |
Phir milenge. See you then! |
