namasTe meraa naam preranaa hai. aap se milkar khushi hui.
Hi, My name is Prerana. Nice to meet you.
Welcome to HindiPod101.com’s “3 minat mein hinDi.” The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Hindi.
In the last lesson, we learned how to ask "Who" questions in Hindi.
This time, we are going to ask questions with the word "Why?"
Imagine your boss is giving you a call because you are not at work today... He will certainly ask you Tum aaj DafTar kyun nahiin aaye?
[slowly] Tum aaj DafTar kyun nahiin aaye?
So let’s break down this question:
First we had:
Tum which is the informal “you”
aaj means “today”
DafTar means “office”
kyun which is the basic translation of "Why" in Hindi
nahin aaye, where aaye is the 2nd person of the verb aana in the present tense and nahiin is the negative form
So in Hindi, kyun means "Why", and is used to ask the reason for something.
So for example, if your boss is asking you "Why are you late today?" he will say Tum aaj Daer se kyun aaye?
Here, he uses "Why" in order to get explanations and reasons.
Another common usage of kyun is to ask the objective of something. But in this case, we can also use kis liye.
Actually kis liye? is closer to the meaning of "What for?" In Hindi we often say yah kis liye banaa hai which literally means "What is it made for?"
Now it’s time for Prerana’s Points
A famous expression in India is kyun nahiin? which means, as in English, "Why not?"
You can use it to accept a proposition if you agree.
For example if a friend asks you suddenly "And what about going to the cinema tonight?"
You can answer kyun nahiin? "Why not?"
Before ending this lesson, Let’s review all the ways to say "Why" in Hindi:
- kyun is the basic translation of "Why," as in Tum Daer se kyun aaye? "Why are you late?"
- kis liye? which is "What for?"
Finally, kyun nahiin? is "Why not?"
Congratulations! This lesson is the last lesson of this video series.
But it’s hopefully not the last you learn about the Hindi language! To take your language ability to the next level, check out HindiPod101.com, the fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Hindi.

I am also very interested in lessons for learning the Devanagari alphabet (writing and reading) and proper pronunciation for each letter. Currently I am using other resources to learn this. I believe that learning to read will help me in my goal of understanding and comprehending the language better as well as expanding my vocabulary.
