| Eric: Hi everyone, and welcome back to HindiPod101.com. This is Lower Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 16 - Booking a Stay in an Indian Hotel. Eric here. |
| Udita: नमस्ते I'm Udita. |
| Eric: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to express preferences in Hindi. The conversation takes place at a travel agency. |
| Udita: It's between Sapna and a travel agent. |
| Eric: The speakers are strangers, so they’ll be using formal Hindi. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |

| Travel Agent: हाँ बिलकुल! हम क्वालिटी की जांच के बिना कोई भी जगह की सिफारिश नहीं करते। एक लॉज है घाटी में जो बस अड्डे के बगल में है। पास में एक सुन्दर पार्क है। दूसरी जगह थोड़ा ऊपर, पहाड़ों में है, जहाँ आप घूमने जायेंगी। |
| Sapna: पहाड़ वाला अच्छा है! तीनों के लिए कमरा मिलेगा? |
| Travel Agent: जी। उनके पास कमरा भी है, और लकड़ी के केबिन में भी अलग से रह सकते हैं। हमारे पहले ग्राहकों को यहाँ का वातावरण बहुत पसंद आया था। |
| Sapna: अच्छा? हम हो सके तो केबिन में रहना चाहेंगे। |

| Eric: Now, listen to the conversation with the English translation. |
| Travel agent: What kind of hotel would you like? |
| Sapna: Any nice place—it's fine if it’s simple, as long as the facilities are good. |
| Travel agent: All right. In that case, would you prefer to stay in a proper hotel or in a mountain lodge? |
| Sapna: A lodge sounds nice. It’ll have all the basic facilities, food and water, and will be clean, right? |
| Travel agent: Yes of course! We don't recommend any place without making sure of the quality of service. There’s one lodge in the valley that’s right next to the bus stop. There’s a beautiful park next to it. The other one is higher up the mountain, where you’ll be travelling to. |
| Sapna: The one up in the mountains sounds good. Can we get a room there for three people? |
| Travel agent: Yes they have rooms available, as well as separate log cabins. Our last customers really liked the atmosphere of this place. |
| Sapna: Really? We'd like to stay in the cabins if possible. |
| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Udita: Eric, have you ever heard about hill stations in India? |
| Eric: I have! Hill stations are high-altitude towns set up by European colonialists as summer getaways. They’re not only perfect to retire and settle down, but also make for a wonderful and memorable vacation destination. |
| Udita: I couldn’t have said it better. Hill stations provide some of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. They continue to be popular scenic tourist spots where people go away for weekends or long holidays to escape the hustle and bustle of the cities, and enjoy the cool mountain weather and scenery. |
| Eric: What are the most popular locations? |
| Udita: I’d say they are Dalhousie, Manali, Shimla, Nainital, Darjeeling in the north and east, as well as Conoor, Ooty, Shillong, Khandala in the south, amongst many others. There are more than 50 separate hill stations around India, each one as uniquely breathtaking and peaceful as the next. |
| Eric: So listeners, if you want to enjoy a peaceful respite in a blissful location, you should definitely consider visiting one of the many Indian hill stations! Okay, now onto the vocab. |

| KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
| Eric: Let's take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is.. |
| Udita: साफ़ सुतरा |
| Eric: which means “spick and span,” or “clean”. |
| Udita: “Saaf” means “clean”, but “SuTraa” doesn't actually mean anything on its own. It’s a set phrase, a figure of speech that means something like “completely clean!” |
| Eric: You can use it to express that something seems “clean and shiny,” similar to the English phrase “spick and span”. |
| Udita: “Saaf SuTraa” is commonly used to talk about something being generally clean overall. |
| Eric: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
| Udita: Sure. For example, you can say.. तुम्हारा कमरा बहुत दिनों बाद साफ़-सुतरा लग रहा है। |
| Eric: ..which means “Your room looks very neat and clean after a long time.” Okay, what's the next phrase? |
| Udita: बस अड्डा |
| Eric: which means “bus station” |
| Udita: “baS” is a loanword from English, and “addaa” means “station”. |
| Eric: So, altogether it means “bus station”. |
| Udita: The word “addaa” refers to any place where things gather, like a “haunt”, so when it’s used in the context of vehicles, it means “station”. |
| Eric: But remember listeners, you can only use this word for things that can gather round, like buses or planes. |
| Udita: “addaa” is never used to refer to train stations, because trains are organised by platforms instead of pulling up at a roundabout or runway, like buses and planes do. |
| Eric: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
| Udita: Sure. For example, you can say.. यहां पास में कोई बस अड्डा नहीं है। |
| Eric: .. which means “There is no bus station near here.” Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |

| Eric: In this lesson you’ll learn how to express preferences in Hindi. |
| Udita: To do this, you can use the verb चलेगा caLegaa, which is the conjugated form of the verb चलना caLNaa. Basically चलना caLNaa means “to walk” or “to go”. When we use it in the singular form future tense, it is conjugated as… चलेगा caLegaa |
| Eric: It means “will walk” or “will do”. And you can use it to talk about something that is generally sufficient. |
| Udita: Right. If you’re selecting something from a few options, you can say यह चलेगा yah caLegaa, to mean “This will do”, or, in other words, “This is good”. |
| Eric: You can also use this verb to explain your criteria – to describe the things you are looking for, and what qualities are acceptable. For example, you can say… |
| Udita: मुझे एक लैपटॉप खरीदना है जिसका प्रोसेसर बहुत तेज़ हो, और हार्ड ड्राइव में ज़्यादा स्पेस। कोई भी रंग का चलेगा। |
| Eric: “I want to buy a laptop with a high-speed processor, and lots of space in the hard drive. Any color will do..” In this sentence we have some requirements for the laptop - it should have a high-speed processor and large hard drive. However, when it comes to colors, any color is OK. |
| Udita: In this case we used the word चलेगा caLegaa. |
| Eric: So, once again, we can use it about terms that are negotiable or acceptable. You just need to add it to the features of things that you feel are acceptable for you. |
| Udita: That's right. For example, you can say...काला या चांदी रंग चलेगा। kaaLaa yaa caaNDii raNg caLegaa |
| Eric: which means “Black or silver will do.” |
| Udita: or if you are buying a dress and the shopkeeper asks you what kind of material you want, you can say सूती चलेगा SuuTii caLegaa |
| Eric: “Cotton will do”. |
| Udita: You can also say the word भी bhii which means “also” before चलेगा caLegaa . भी चलेगा bhii caLegaa means “will also do”. |
| Eric: You can use this phrase to explain up to what extent you are willing to be flexible, how much you’re willing to negotiate. For example… |
| Udita: मुझे एक लैपटॉप खरीदना है जिसका प्रोसेसर बहुत तेज़ हो, और हार्ड ड्राइव में ज़्यादा स्पेस। दाम ज़्यादा हो तो भी चलेगा। mujhe ek Laiptaup khariiDNaa hai jiSkaa proSeSar bahuT Tez ho, aur haard draaiive mein zyaaDa SpeS. Daam zyaaDaa ho To bhii caLegaa. |
| Eric: This sentence means “I want to buy a laptop with a high-speed processor, and lots of space in the hard drive. It’s fine if it’s expensive.” So, this means that we want to buy a laptop with a high-speed processor and large hard drive. Basically we prefer to buy a cheap laptop, but an expensive one is also negotiable. |
| Udita: Right. Adding भी चलेगा bhii caLegaa in this case means that you would prefer a cheap option, but an expensive option is acceptable as long as the other criteria are met. |
| Eric: Alright, so to wrap up this lesson, let's give some sample sentences. |
| Udita: दोपहर या शाम की फ़्लाइट चलेगी। |
| Eric: “The afternoon or evening flight is fine.” |
| Udita: वह ऐसे कैंडिडेट को खोंज रहे हैं जो कॉमर्स पढ़ा हुआ है, एकाउंटिंग न की हो तो भी चलेगा। |
| Eric: “They’re looking for a candidate who has an education in commerce, it’s fine if he hasn’t learned accounting.” |
| Udita: पोस्टर में यह शब्द साफ़ दिखने चाहिए, दुसरे रंग में हो तो भी चलेगा। |
| Eric: “These words should be clearly visible on the poster. It’s fine if they’re in a different color.” |
