SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:

John: Shakti, what's our first expression?
Shakti: दाल न गलना
John: literally meaning "pulses didn't dissolve." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "plan didn't work, wasted attempt."

John: literally meaning "homemade chicken and lentils are equal." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "self possessions, family are always undermined."

John: Use this slang expression when you want to refer to someone undermining or having little respect for their self-possessions. There are two English equivalents that can be used to explain this Hindi proverb. These are "Familiarity breeds contempt" and "A Prophet is not honored in his own country".

John: literally meaning "sour grapes." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "putting something down just because you can't have it."

John: Use this slang expression when you want to refer to someone who has a negative attitude toward something that they can't have. It is the literal translation of the English "sour grapes" and that's exactly how it is used.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.

John: Okay, what's the last expression?
Shakti: दाल में कुछ काला होना
John: literally meaning "something black in the lentils." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "something suspicious, something not being right."

John: Use this slang expression when you want to say that something isn't right or something is suspicious, or you suspect foul play or that something is being hidden.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Shakti: [NORMAL] इसके रंग-ढंग से लगता है कि यह ज़रूर कुछ छिपा रहा है। दाल में कुछ तो ज़रूर काला है। [SLOW] इसके रंग-ढंग से लगता है कि यह ज़रूर कुछ छिपा रहा है। दाल में कुछ तो ज़रूर काला है।
John: "The way he is acting shows that he is definitely hiding something. Something is definitely not right."
Shakti: [NORMAL] इसके रंग-ढंग से लगता है कि यह ज़रूर कुछ छिपा रहा है। दाल में कुछ तो ज़रूर काला है।
