INTRODUCTION
John: Expressions Related To Animals - Part 1
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to HindiPod101.com. I'm John.
Shakti: And I'm Shakti!
John: This is Must-Know Hindi Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 4. In this lesson, you'll learn expressions related to animals — part 1.
John: Most of us love animals. This is probably why animals and animal behaviors are so often used to express certain characteristics or opinions. Check these expressions and find out how you can use them in your day-to-day life.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Shakti: किताबी कीड़ा
Shakti: बली का बकरा
Shakti: गऊ की तरह होना
Shakti: गीदड़ भभकी
John: Shakti, what's our first expression?
Shakti: किताबी कीड़ा
John: literally meaning "bookworm." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "bookworm."
Shakti: [SLOW] किताबी कीड़ा [NORMAL] किताबी कीड़ा
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Shakti: किताबी कीड़ा
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to refer to someone who is always immersed in books or loves to read. It is the same as the English "bookworm."
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Shakti: [NORMAL] हालांकि वह एक किताबी कीड़ा है, फिर भी उसका सामान्य ज्ञान शून्य है। [SLOW] हालांकि वह एक किताबी कीड़ा है, फिर भी उसका सामान्य ज्ञान शून्य है।
John: "Although he's a bookworm, his general knowledge is zero."
Shakti: [NORMAL] हालांकि वह एक किताबी कीड़ा है, फिर भी उसका सामान्य ज्ञान शून्य है।
John: Okay, what's the next expression?
Shakti: बली का बकरा
John: literally meaning "goat for sacrifice." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "scapegoat."
Shakti: [SLOW] बली का बकरा [NORMAL] बली का बकरा
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Shakti: बली का बकरा
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to refer to someone who has been made a scapegoat in any situation.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Shakti: [NORMAL] उसने चोरी नहीं की थी, वह तो बली का बकरा बन गया। [SLOW] उसने चोरी नहीं की थी, वह तो बली का बकरा बन गया।
John: "He didn't steal, he is just a scapegoat."
Shakti: [NORMAL] उसने चोरी नहीं की थी, वह तो बली का बकरा बन गया।
John: Okay, what's our next expression?
Shakti: गऊ की तरह होना
John: literally meaning "like a cow." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "innocent."
Shakti: [SLOW] गऊ की तरह होना [NORMAL] गऊ की तरह होना
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Shakti: गऊ की तरह होना
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to refer to a girl or woman who is very innocent, simple, and with no cunningness. Since a cow is considered to be very innocent and pure, when you compare a woman to a cow it means that she is as pure and innocent as the animal.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Shakti: [NORMAL] मेरी बहन बिल्कुल गऊ की तरह सीधी है। [SLOW] मेरी बहन बिल्कुल गऊ की तरह सीधी है।
John: "My sister is as innocent as a cow."
Shakti: [NORMAL] मेरी बहन बिल्कुल गऊ की तरह सीधी है।
John: Okay, what's the last expression?
Shakti: गीदड़ भभकी
John: literally meaning "jackal threats." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "false threats."
Shakti: [SLOW] गीदड़ भभकी [NORMAL] गीदड़ भभकी
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Shakti: गीदड़ भभकी
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression to refer to threats that are given with the purpose of scaring the other person rather than actually carrying them out. It is taken from the fact that jackals usually try to scare humans or other more powerful animals, but they know they are not capable of doing anything.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Shakti: [NORMAL] तुम्हारी गीदड़ भभकियों का मुझ पर कोई असर नहीं होने वाला है। [SLOW] तुम्हारी गीदड़ भभकियों का मुझ पर कोई असर नहीं होने वाला है।
John: "Your false threats are not going to have any effect on me."
Shakti: [NORMAL] तुम्हारी गीदड़ भभकियों का मुझ पर कोई असर नहीं होने वाला है।
