Survival Phrases lesson 1 - How to Say Thank You in Hindi
Hello! Namaste! My name is Manasi, and I'll be your language teacher and cultural guide throughout this introductory course.
Wherever your destination may be, manners are a must! And in this respect, India is no different. So in our very first lesson, we'll be teaching you a simple phrase that is bound to come in handy throughout your trip to India. I can't stress this enough, a little bit of language can go such a long way!
In Hindi, "Thank you" is धन्यवाद| (DHanyavaaD).
धन्यवाद| (DHanyavaaD)
Let’s break it down by syllable: धन्यवाद| (DHanyavaaD)
Now let's hear it one more time: धन्यवाद| (DHanyavaaD)
You can emphasize धन्यवाद| (DHanyavaaD) by adding बहुत (bahuT), which literally means "very much." You could say बहुत धन्यवाद| (bahuT DHanyavaaD), which would be equivalent to "Thank you very much," or "Thanks a lot."
बहुत धन्यवाद| (bahuT DHanyavaaD)
बहुत धन्यवाद| (bahuT DHanyavaaD)
Let’s break it down by syllable: बहुत धन्यवाद| (bahuT DHanyavaaD)
Now let's hear it once again: बहुत धन्यवाद| (bahuT DHanyavaaD)
In Hindi, there are other ways to express one's gratitude. धन्यवाद| (DHanyavaaD) derives from Sanskrit, and it's felt as quite formal. That's why some people prefer to use Urdu expressions, which are felt as more colloquial.
A more colloquial expression for "Thank you" in Hindi is शुक्रिया| (SHukriyaa).
शुक्रिया| (SHukriyaa)
Let’s break it down by syllable: शुक्रिया| (SHukriyaa)
Now let's hear it one more time: शुक्रिया| (SHukriyaa)
Also, शुक्रिया| (SHukriyaa) can be preceded by बहुत (bahuT), which means "very much."
Now let's hear it once again: बहुत (bahuT)
बहुत (bahuT)
Let’s break it down by syllable: बहुत (bahuT)
Now let's hear it one more time: बहुत शुक्रिया| (bahuT SHukriyaa)

Outro

Okay, to close out today's lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so गुड लक! (guud Lak!), which means "good luck" in Hindi.
(Formal) "Thank you" - धन्यवाद| (DHanyavaaD)

Hi Lee,

Thanks for your post!

Hindi is generally more common in Northern India. Bengali may be required in West Bengal. But mostly some amount of Hindi is understood even in Bengal.

We wish you all the best in learning Hindi. If you have any questions, feel free to let us know.

Best Wishes,

Roohi

Hi~ I'm just interested because I have always been interested in languages. Learning Hindi is just a hobby. But I'm serious about learning it. I thought of India and how I had to learn either Bengali or Hindi to represent all those people. Hindi was the easiest to find.

Hi Ani,

Thanks for your post!

There isn't any difference in meaning between the two. "SahayaTaa" is more common in written formal language, whereas "maDaD" is used more commonly in conversations. You can use either of the two with the same meaning, that is, "Thank you for your help!"

I hope this helps!
