Survival Phrases lesson 24, Getting Around India by Bus. |
In the previous lesson, we learned how to ask the bus driver if the bus covers your destination. |
Once on the bus, you'll hear announcements informing the passengers about where the bus will stop next. In India, it will be normal that most of the announcements you hear are both in Hindi and English. In the case that there is no English announcement though, you may not catch the location they announce. The phrase aglaa steSHan kaunsaa hai? "What is the next stop?" may be indispensable. |
aglaa steSHan kaunsaa hai? |
aglaa steSHan kaunsaa hai? |
The first word is aglaa, which is a pronoun in Hindi meaning "the next." |
It is followed by steSHan, the same as "station" in English. |
Next is kaunsaa, which means "which." |
And finally, hai, which means “is.” |
Let’s break down these words and hear them one more time: aglaa steSHan kaunsaa hai? |

Another way of inquiring could be to ask if your desired station is the next stop. For the phrase aglaa steSHan, we'll use the famous location in Mumbai, which is Andheri as the destination. In Hindi, the phrase is kya aglaa steSHan anDHerii hai? or "Is Andheri the next stop?" |
kyaa aglaa steSHan anDHerii hai? |
kyaa aglaa steSHan anDHerii hai? |
Let’s break down these words and hear the entire phrase one more time: kyaa aglaa steSHan anDHerii hai? |

Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrases and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so गुड लक! (guud Lak!), which means "good luck" in Hindi. |
