Survival Phrases lesson 25, Riding the Trains in India Part 1. |
In Delhi, riding the rails is one of the best choices you can make to get around and reach all the most important parts of the city. Today, we are going to cover how to get on the rail. |
You can buy tickets for the train from the machines located at the station. Just in case you get too confused and have questions to ask of the station attendant, we have prepared this lesson just for you! |
Now, let's go and see how you can get our train ticket. As you can remember from the previous lessons covering how to get a bus ticket, we can accomplish this by asking "Excuse me, a train ticket please." maaf kiijiye ....... ke liye ek tren tikat. |
As you can see, the sentence doesn't change from the one we covered in lesson 22, aside from the word “train,” which substitutes the word "bus." Therefore, you have maaf kiijiye or "excuse me," followed by the destination, and then ke liye or "for," then ek or "one," followed by train. Finally, you have tikat, which means "ticket," just as in English. |
So let’s break down these words and hear them one more time: maaf kiijiye ....... ke liye ek tren tikat. |
Let’s repeat the entire sentence now: maaf kiijiye ....... ke liye ek tren tikat. |
You need to add the destination after maaf kiijiye. Our location for today's lesson will be Delhi. Let's imagine you need to go from Mandi House to Laxmi Nagar, and you need to ask what line you have to take to get there. You can accomplish this by asking "Excuse me, what line do I need to take for Mandi House?" maaf kiijiye mandii haaus ke liye kaunsii laain hai? |
maaf kiijiye mandii haaus ke liye kaunsii laain hai? |
maaf kiijiye mandii haaus ke liye kaunsii laain hai? |
Let's see the sentence word by word. First, you have the usual maaf kiijiye, followed by mandii haaus, which is a noun, and you have to use your destination, followed by the word ke liye or "for." Next you have kaunsii or "which," and finally, you have the laain hai or "line." |
Let’s hear everything one more time: maaf kiijiye mandii haaus ke liye kaunsii laain hai? |
maaf kiijiye mandii haaus ke liye kaunsii laain hai? |
maaf kiijiye mandii haaus ke liye kaunsii laain hai? |
A possible answer to your question could be: aap laal laain le liijiye. |
aap laal laain le liijiye |
Or "You can take the red line." |
This sentence is very simple. aap or "you" is the polite form, followed by laal laain or "red line," then le liijiye, which means "please take." |
Let’s break it down by syllable and hear it one more time: aap laal laain le liijiye. |
aap laal laain le liijiye |
Outro

Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrases and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so गुड लक! (guud Lak!), which means "good luck" in Hindi. |
