Survival Phrases lesson 31 - Asking for Directions in Hindi |
In this lesson, we'll introduce you to directions that will help you find the place you are looking for. Previously we introduced "Is there a place near here?" and "Where is there a (something)?" But while we can now ask, we haven't addressed understanding the answer. In this lesson, we're going to work on understanding what someone tells us. We'll go over basic directions. |
First, we have "go straight." |
In Hindi, "go straight" is: siiDHe jaao. |
siiDHe jaao |
Let’s break it down by syllable: siiDHe jaao |
Now let's hear it once again: siiDHe jaao |
First, we have siiDHe, which means "straight," and the word jaao, which means "you go." |
siiDHe jaao |
siiDHe jaao |
Literally, this means "go straight." |
Let's look at the next expression to help us turn. |
Let's cover "turn right," which in Hindi is: Daahine muden. |
Daahine muden |
Let’s break it down by syllable: Daahine muden |
Now let's hear it once again: Daahine muden |
The first word is दाएँ (Dahine), which means "right." We follow this with muden, which comes from the verb mudana, meaning "to turn." |
So all together, we have Dahine muden. |
Daahine muden |
Now let's work on "turn left." |
In Hindi, "turn left" is: baayen muden. |
baayen muden |
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: baayen muden. |
baayen muden |
Let's try now with "Turn right at the traffic light." which in Hindi is: traefic laits par Daahine muden. |
Before Daahine muden, or "turn right," which we have just seen, you have traefic laits par, or "at the traffic light." |
Let's break it down and hear it one more time: traefic laits par |
First, you have traefic, the same as the English "traffic." |
Next is laits, or "lights," followed by par, which in English is "at the." |
Let’s hear the entire sentence now: traefic laits par Daahine muden. |
traefic laits par Daahine muden. |
"It's on the right" in Hindi is: Daahine hai. |
Daahine hai |
Let’s break it down by syllable: Daahine hai |
Now let's hear it once again: Daahine hai |
The first word, Daahine means "right." |
Finally, we have hai, meaning "is." |
So all together, we have Daahine hai. |
"It's on the left" in Hindi is: baayen hai. |
baayen hai |
The only difference is the word baayen in place of Dahine. |
Let’s break it down by syllable: baayen hai |
Now let's hear it once again: baayen hai |
