| Survival Phrases lesson 4 - Basic Hindi Greetings |
| Today, we'll cover basic greetings. As there are quite a few to cover, let's jump right in. |
| In Hindi, we can use the word नमस्ते| (namasTe) as a universal greeting. We use it both when greeting and when parting, usually while saying namaste. |
| Let’s say it slowly now: नमस्ते| (namasTe) |
| Now let's hear it once again: नमस्ते| (namasTe) |
| There is also a variation of this same greeting that sounds a little more formal, or plural. This is नमस्कार| (namaskaar). |

| Another way to make नमस्ते| (namasTe) sound more respectful is to add the particle -jii at the end, as in namasTe-jii. We can also add -jii to the name of a person when we want to address that person with respect. |

| In Hindi, we do not usually change the greetings based on the time of day. That is to say, we seldom use some literal translations of the English greetings "Good morning" and "Good night." Anyway, you can use the greeting for "Good night" more easily if you wish. "Good night" in Hindi is शुभ रात्री| (SHuBH raaTrii). |

| The first word, शुभ (SHuBH), means "good." |

| In India, there are many religions, and Indians are typically very tolerant toward different creeds. Often, Hindi speakers may choose to greet others according to their religion. A typical Hindu greeting, both for "hello" and "good-bye," is हरी ओम| (harii om). |

| Another common Hindu greeting we use similarly is राम-राम| (raam-raam). |
